All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16
The bible is “breathed out by God”. What an incredible thought. He put a lot of effort into it; pouring out his love onto every page. He gave it that we would know him and in knowing him be lead into a joyous relationship with him through Jesus.
Sadly for much of American Evangelical Christianity we remain mostly biblical ignorant. We may own a bible, but it hasn’t yet owned us. We are not captivated by it, desperate for or depended upon scripture. We could talk about the “why” of it all for hours, but that’s not the purpose of this post. Rather my hope here is to spark an interest, to fan a Holy Spirit kindled ember of intrigue into God’s Word.
As a pastor of a church and as a Follower of Jesus, my desire for those I am privileged to shepherd and for anyone seeking more life, freedom and joy this year is that we would find it by diving into God’s word. Not out of religious obligation or in an effort to earn God’s favor, but as Jesus said in John 15:11, to find fulness of joy in him. The whole bible points to Jesus and He alone transforms lives and makes life come alive.
Paul says here that in scripture we will find the instruction we are looking for, the correction we need and the way to righteousness the Lord requires. God’s desire in speaking to us through the bible is to be a good Father, making us competent and equipped to do good in the world. To enjoy a loving relationship with him and to live with purpose in the world.
To this end we have, with the help of friends, put together several resources to help you read through the bible this year. It’s a simple plan with an attainable process. Might I encourage you to at least take a look at it. Whether you are a Christian or just curious, I’d like to extend an invitation to join me and others on a journey; one I believe has the power to change your life and give you an unimaginable joy. You can try it on your own, but it’s even better and more beneficial walking with someone else.
For Jesus glory and our joy
