When we planted our church seven years ago we were seeking to an “authentic” community of Christ Followers. Basically we were just saying we wanted to be more real (aka cooler) than other churches. One of the ways we sought to set ourselves apart was to recover some of the more classical forms of church. We started looking into the church calendar and celebrating certain neglected seasons such as Advent and Lent. It took a couple years, but it caught on in our church and people looked forward to what it brought to their lives and the lives of their family each year.
The last couple of years we have slowed up a bit on formally observing the seasons as church. Maybe for the sake of change, maybe cause we are maturing and finding our own voice, or maybe just cause its gotten cool to do so and there is a part of me that makes that uncool. Non-the-less the church calendar offers some great opportunities to reset our gaze on Jesus; giving us some wonderful opportunities to repent of sin, resent refocus our worship and experience him in different ways.
Today marks the start of the season of Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter. Many people are looking into it for the first time. Some people have questions or concerns. Still others are looking for resources to help them observe it themselves. In response I’ve put together a few links and resources to help you best figure out what to do with Lent.
